August 2007 WORLD WATER WEEK, 2007

Delegates from around the world have converged on Stockholm for this year’s World Water Week. Hot topics include:

  • The challenges associated with water and climate change
  • How to save millions of lives every year by solving the problems associated with inadequate sanitation
  • The importance of effective water management
  • …and much more. See the website for more details.

    July 2007 JULY FLOODS

As the British summer finally arrives and we start to take stock, it’s easy to become cynical about the need for water conservation in the wake of July’s floods. However, it is business as usual at ADSM, as Patrick McCart, ADSM Director, explains:

“Bewl Water reservoir in Kent is 83% full, which isn’t unusual for this time of year, but shows that even the kind of sustained rainfall we have had over the last for weeks is not enough to fill our aquifers and reservoirs.”

“Purifying water and delivering it to businesses and homes requires large amounts of energy. By reducing our consumption, we can have a significant impact on the emission of harmful greenhouse gases and at the same time, provide better value to our clients and shareholders.”

Many of ADSM’s customers make use of rainwater and recycled grey water and whilst this is not suitable for drinking, it provided much-needed supplies for washing and flushing WCs. “Being able to cope in an emergency is not always the first thing our customers think of but is, nonetheless, another important benefit of implementing a strategy for water management,” says Patrick.

    March 2007 WORLD WATER DAY

There are still more than one billion people in the world who lack access to a safe supply of water and instead have to drink from contaminated sources. As a result they face the prospect of illness and even death. 5000 children die every day as a result of drinking dirty water.

"THE DROUGHT IS FAR FROM OVER" SAYS THAMES WATER

Thames Water withdraws application for London Drought Order but appealed to customers to continue the good work, as the long-term drought is far from over.

The company’s Environment Director, Richard Aylard, said:

“There is still a drought, but it isn’t getting any worse, and we don’t need to bring in any more restrictions beyond the existing hosepipe and sprinkler ban.

“The short-term threat has receded enough for us not to need a Drought Order in 2006, but the underlying situation remains serious. Two successive dry winters have left groundwater levels in much of the region very low.

“A third successive dry winter would make the situation worse and – depending on the amount of rain we receive - could mean that we need to apply again for a Drought Order early in 2007. This makes it even more important that we all continue to use water wisely and review the situation regularly.

The hosepipe and sprinkler ban introduced in April will remain in place across the Thames Water region until there has been sufficient rainfall to replenish groundwater and surface water supplies.

UK'S LARGEST WATER COMPANY TURNS TO A DROUGHT TO SOLVE THE WATER CRISIS

Thames Water has applied for a Drought Order to cover the London water supply area, including most London Boroughs, together with the Borough (or District) Councils of Broxborne, Dartford, East Hertfordshire, Elmbridge, Epping Forest, Epsom and Ewell, Sevenoaks and Spelthorne.

The Thames Valley water supply area, where rainfall has been higher, will be unaffected by the Drought Order, if it is granted. However, they do not rule out the possibility of an application for this area later in the year.

They are not expecting to hear a decision until the end of August. If the Order is granted, they are required to put a statutory notice in local papers 72 hours prior to restrictions.

The order would ban non-essential water use including the filling of privately-owned swimming pools, ornamental ponds other than fish ponds, the operation of mechanical vehicle washers, whether automatic or not, the washing of road vehicles, boats, railway rolling stock or aircraft for any reason other than safety or hygiene, the cleaning of the exterior of buildings, other than windows, the cleaning of windows by hosepipe, sprinkler or other similar apparatus, the cleaning of industrial premises or plant for any reason other than safety or hygiene, the operation of ornamental fountains or cascades, including those where water is recycled, the operation of any cistern which flushes automatically, during any period when those premises are wholly or substantially unoccupied, i.e. urinal cisterns.  For more information about how we can ensure your premises comply with this order please contact us.
